Invest in a Career in the Care Services Industry

The care services sector offers a broad range of career opportunities, from entry level roles through to senior management positions, desk-based administration roles right through to those requiring medical qualifications. The sector currently employs more than 35,000 people in NSW alone. Employers will be looking to recruit an additional 10,000 people in the next five years because the number of people using services is expected to rise to 380,000.

Who will fill these new positions?

We expect new positions will be filled by both career changers and others moving into the sector for the first time, and existing workers looking to develop or change careers within the sector

Our research shows the following interesting facts:

  •  About 21% of people looking for work on carecareers are career changers looking for a more satisfying and fulfilling career.
  • The majority of career changers come from the retail/sales (23%), administration (12%) and hospitality (14%) industries.
  • The majority of career changers are women, with an average age of 34.
  • People making the switch to the disability and community care sector are well-educated, with 80% holding a certificate, diploma or degree from another sector. More than a third has commenced certificate training in a care-related field.

carecareers recently attended the successful Reinvent Your Career Expo at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Sydney. The positive response we received at the Expo has made the decision to attend both Sydney and Melbourne Reinvent Your Career Expos next year a must.

Mike Field, Project Manager, Workforce Recruitment at National Disability Services said, “The sector offers a broad range of career choices, from speech pathologists and occupational therapists to drivers, gardeners and IT professionals. Students and young people, return-to-work parents and career changers will play a vital role in filling job vacancies and providing high-quality support services in the future.”
