Brodie Constructs New Future

After returning home from six months service in Afghanistan, Brisbane’s Brodie Owen was looking for a new career direction.

Brodie had undertaken a chef’s apprenticeship before entering the army but was in search of a job that would allow him to be his own boss.

With an interest in carpentry, Brodie saw an opportunity to build a lifelong career in construction and one day work for himself.

Having never worked in the industry, Brodie recognised the need to undertake training and enrolled in Construction Skills Queensland’s (CSQ) Trade Start program running at the Gold Coast School of Construction.

Trade Start is a pre-apprenticeship training program that allows participants to gain real world experience with a local employer while working towards a Certificate I in General Construction.

The program provides the ideal preparation for full-time work in the industry and helped Brodie to gain an apprenticeship with Abode Construction.

Now, six months into his apprenticeship, Brodie believes the Trade Start program has given him a great start in construction.

“Trade Start gave me the practical skills and confidence to take on the challenge of working in carpentry.

“Through the program I also learned about the structure of the industry and the best ways to approach potential employers.

“I’m now settling into my apprenticeship and am really enjoying the variety of challenges. It’s rewarding to see the results of your hard work each day,” he said.

Brodie said construction was also the ideal industry to help him achieve personal his goals.

“I have always been interested in investing in property. Becoming a carpenter will open up many new opportunities for me in this area.

“Being able to renovate will allow me to maximise my potential returns on a project,” he said.

Those interested in following in the footsteps of Brodie and joining the construction industry can gain helpful advice at the CSQ stand at the Reinvent Your Career Expo.

The CSQ team can provide information on a range of funded programs to help those looking to enter the industry or build on their existing skills.
